What are modalities?
A massage modality is a specific technique or style of massage therapy, each with its own methods, goals, and benefits. Think of it as a "type" or "approach" to massage.
Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage is a massage modality that focuses on targeting the deeper layers of muscles, tendons, and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). It uses slow, firm pressure and techniques like deep finger strokes, forearm pressure, and even elbow work to break up adhesions ("knots") and release chronic muscle tension.
Structural Integration
Structural Integration massage is a specialized form of bodywork that focuses on aligning and balancing the body’s structure—particularly the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs.
Functional Range Release
"Functional Range Release" (FR Release) is a manual therapy system that focuses on improving tissue quality, reducing pain, and increasing range of motion and function. It’s part of a broader system called Functional Range Systems, which includes other components like Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) and KinStretch
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most classic and commonly offered type of massage therapy. It’s known for being gentle, relaxing, and flowing, making it perfect for people new to massage or looking to unwind and de-stress.
Cupping
Cupping is a therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. It's used in traditional medicine, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and has been adopted by some modern practitioners for various health and wellness purposes. Sports cupping is a modern application of traditional cupping therapy used specifically to help athletes with muscle recovery, pain relief, and performance enhancement.
Thai Massage
Thai massage is a unique and dynamic form of bodywork that blends acupressure, assisted stretching, and rhythmic compression. It's often described as a cross between massage and yoga, and it's done fully clothed on a padded mat on the floor—no oils or lotions involved.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is a massage modality specifically designed for athletes and active individuals. It’s focused on enhancing performance, preventing injuries, and aiding recovery—but you don’t have to be a pro athlete to benefit from it.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Neuromuscular Re-education (NMR) is a therapeutic technique used to restore normal movement patterns, improve posture, and correct muscle imbalances by retraining how your nerves and muscles work together. It’s not just a massage technique—it’s more of a clinical rehab approach often used in physical therapy, chiropractic care, or advanced massage therapy.
Kinesio Tape
Kinesio Tape (also known as Kinesiology Tape) is a stretchy, therapeutic tape used to support muscles and joints without restricting movement. You’ve probably seen athletes wearing it—it’s that colorful, wave-patterned tape applied in different shapes across the body.
Myofascial Scraping
Myofascial scraping, also known as Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), is a technique that uses specially designed tools to scrape along the skin and underlying tissues to help release myofascial adhesions (a.k.a. stuck connective tissue), reduce pain, and improve mobility.
